ABOUT US

In 2015, Motivated by the persistent disparities and systemic challenges faced by marginalized communities in Somalia, a group of five dedicated Somali youth professionals with diverse backgrounds and expertise united with a shared commitment to empower and address the unique challenges faced by women, Adolescent girls, Persons with disability and other marginalized communities.
This group came together to establish the Center for Empowering Marginalized Communities (CEMCo).

CEMCo's genesis was rooted in the founders' firsthand experiences and observations of the multifaceted issues plaguing marginalized populations; economic exclusion, cycle of poverty that contributes to marginalization, limited access to opportunities, educational disparities, legal access barriers, etc.

In its initial stages, CEMCo took shape as a grassroots self-help initiative, with the founders actively engaging their personal and professional networks for support. The group leveraged their connections within the community, reaching out to individuals who shared their passion for empowering marginalized populations. This grassroots approach not only generated financial support but also fostered a sense of community ownership and involvement from the outset.

Organization Background

Cemco providing sanitation to the vulnerable communities in somalia

Despite the founders’ earnest efforts in fundraising from personal networks and the community, the financial needs for implementing impactful initiatives far exceeded the funds they could generate through these efforts. Recognizing the imperative to scale their impact and sustain their initiatives, they made a strategic decision to transition CEMCo from a self-help group to a formally registered local NGO in 2016. Since its inception, CEMCo has achieved substantial milestones in its mission to empower marginalized communities. CEMCo has supported women and girls with vocational training and livelihood support programs, specifically, Tailoring programs, Tie & Dye, Henna application and Literacy education for adults; Facilitated the enrolment and provided academic support and resources to children from marginalized backgrounds in educational programs; Assisted persons with disabilities (PWD) with tailored support programs, focusing on education, skills development and accessibility; Implemented WASH initiatives benefiting persons with disabilities, ensuring access to clean water and sanitary facilities.
